Compact HPL toilet cubicles: thickness and what to ask

Published 5 min read

Washrooms are wet, busy and abused. Compact HPL cubicles are popular in hospitals, offices and public buildings because the panel does not swell, cleans easily and takes knocks.

This guide covers what compact HPL is, the thickness to specify, and the questions that separate a good supplier from a poor one.

What compact HPL is

Compact high-pressure laminate is a solid panel of resin-bonded kraft paper with a decorative melamine face on both sides, pressed under heat and pressure into one dense sheet. Because it is solid through its thickness, there is no board core to swell when it gets wet.

Compact laminate is covered by EN 438-4, which applies to laminates of 2 mm and above. Thinner standard HPL, covered by EN 438-3, is bonded to a chipboard or MDF core and is used for cabinets and vanities, not for self-supporting cubicle panels.

Why 12 mm for cubicles

  • Self-supporting

12 mm panels are rigid enough for doors and partitions without a frame behind them.

  • Standard commercial thickness

It is the usual specification for commercial washroom partitions, so hardware and replacement panels are easy to source.

  • Lockers and cladding

Where the panel is not a door, 6 mm is common.

Questions to ask a supplier

  • Is the panel certified to EN 438-4?

Ask for the test or classification documents for the exact product.

  • What is the real thickness and tolerance?

Measure a sample. Under-thickness panels flex and fail early.

  • Are the edges sealed and the core colour consistent?

Black or brown cores both work; clean, sealed edges matter more in wet areas.

  • What hardware is included?

Stainless or aluminium hinges, locks and brackets suit wet areas. Plated steel can rust.

Frequently asked questions

Are compact HPL cubicles waterproof?

The solid core and sealed faces resist moisture and do not swell, which is why they suit washrooms. Keep the edges sealed and use corrosion-resistant hardware.

How long do they last?

With good hardware and normal cleaning they last many years in busy washrooms. Quality of the panel and the fixings drives lifespan.

Can we choose colours and finishes?

Yes. Solid colours and wood and stone effects are available.
